Project Description :

The 24,000 ft² BREEAM “Excellent” rated Port Talbot Justice Centre houses an Informal Youth Court, Tribunal Courts and a two storey Central Fines Unit.

An emphasis on natural daylighting and efficient thermal envelope has driven the design. Flexibility was also important to the Developers and as such the building is capable of functioning as a “state of the art” Court building whilst being able to convert to a B1 office without major disruption.

A simple 13.5 metre wide floorplate allows for an open plan or cellular solution. The building width coupled with floor to ceiling glazing provides quality daylighting and views out to satisfy the requirements of BREEAM resulting in carbon emission levels of circa 15.5 Kg CO2/m² per annum.

The brief called for “a clear distinction between the public and staff entrances”. The spine provides this function by separating both wings and creating entrances at its opposing ends.
