Project Description :

Converting an existing  11 storey 1970’s concrete frame office building in the heart of Manchester City Centre to create a 338 bed hotel with 1300m² of conferencing and function facilities proved the sort of challenge that Rio Architects relish.

Whilst the facade was completely renewed with a contemporary mixture of glass, copper, and zinc, the primary concrete structure (including the projecting floor plates and the cruciform columns at the lower floors) was retained and exposed as an architectural expression of the original building.

The whole development is seen as a regeneration catalyst for the area to the south of Piccadilly Station and our design has deliberately introduced animation and vitality to the streetscape.

The hotel is now a very popular destination for visitors to the City (including celebrities and dignitaries) within a site once considered a black spot of Manchester City Centre.
