Project Description :

Rio Architects were commissioned by UNITE in 2002 to develop an existing builders yard site adjacent to the A48 in Cardiff.

Believed to be the tallest timber framed building in the UK when completed, the 380 bed student accommodation development overcame numerous challenges during the design stages. Due to the numerous easements and site constraints, the available developable area accounted for only 52% of the site. The design required a great deal of inventiveness in order to achieve the Clients commercial requirements for bed numbers.

Rio undertook a substantial urban contextual review of the surrounding area in order to establish a clear design rational and overturn an initial refusal at the Planning committee to eventually win approval on appeal.

The project was completed in 2004.
