Rio Architects scheme to be
tallest building in Wales.

November 2015

Rio Architects are working with the Watkin Jones Group to deliver a mixed use development comprising of purpose built student accommodation (447 bedspaces) and a retail/ commercial unit (Classes A1 and A3) within a 42 storey tower, together with landscaping, ancillary and communal facilities at the site bounded by Customhouse Street, Bute Street and Hope Street and the main railway line from Cardiff Central in Cardiff city centre.

The development of the historically vacant brown field site is an excellent opportunity to regenerate this transient area at the fringe of the city centre which has become detached from the main commercial heart, and provide the catalyst for the city to link more successfully with Callaghan Square, the developing commercial enterprise zone and Cardiff Bay.

At 42 storeys the proposed building will constitute a significant development for the City of Cardiff and the wider area and once complete will be the tallest building in Wales, adding excitement to the local area and city as a whole.

Planning approval was achieved in Mar 2016

New Student Accommodation in Reading

September 2011

Kendrick Halls Student Accommodation in Reading is now complete and has opened for the start of the 2011 academic term. The 604 bed development for UNITE Group PLC has been built in the heart of the Kendrick Conservation Area, adjacent to Reading University’s London Road Campus.

The design has overcome many challenging hurdles in its conception including stringent Planning requirements, numerous TPO trees on site which had to be retained, and the adjacency of the Kendrick Girls Secondary School and privately owned Victorian houses whose privacy and amenity had to be preserved.

The design won the support of both CABE & English Heritage at the Planning stage.

Built by Mansell Construction Ltd using a whole room modular construction the entire scheme was completed in 14 months.

The final product is a series of high quality buildings designed harmoniously with the environment. The deferential treatment of the elevations has created a scheme which is worthy of its location and reflects the high standards expected within a conservation area and of a high quality modern residential development.
